Dylan & Astin's Proposal on the Ocean | Sunset Boat Cruise Proposal in Cape Town

There are moments you get to witness as a photographer that remind you why you do this work at all. Dylan and Astin's proposal is one of them.
Their story started years ago at Stellenbosch University when they were just two students who built a connection that took its time finding its shape. Life carried them forward. They then built something real together, and along the way, they welcomed a son. Through all of it, Dylan knew where this was headed. He just needed the right moment to ask.
So he came to me with a plan, and a request I loved the second I heard it: he'd book a sunset boat cruise for the two of them, and I'd come along as a "content photographer" for the boat company. Astin would have no idea I was really there for her and one of the biggest moments of her life.

We pulled away from the harbour just as the light started to turn gold. A few minutes in, Table Mountain revealed itself in full and that unmistakable silhouette catching the last of the sun, the ocean stretching out beneath it in shades of copper and blue. It was the kind of sky that seems to know it's being watched.
Cape Town has a way of showing off exactly when it matters most, and that evening, it did not hold back.
I kept my camera up, blending in, capturing the guests, the view, the easy laughter on deck, all while watching Dylan out of the corner of my eye. He appeared so calm and focused. A man who had been carrying this secret for weeks, maybe months, and was finally close enough to set it down.
The Signal
Dylan gave the crew a small nod. That was it. That was the sign.
The first notes of Fascination (Astin and Dylan's song) began to play across the deck. I watched Astin's face change before she even understood why. Something in her already knew.
Then Dylan turned to her, dropped to one knee right there on the boat, with Table Mountain glowing behind him and the ocean moving quietly beneath them both, and asked her to marry him.
The Yes
Astin said yes, and the whole boat erupted. Guests who'd been let in on the secret broke into applause, the crew cheered, and for a few seconds, it felt like the entire deck was holding its breath and releasing it all at once. Astin laughed, cried, covered her face, looked at Dylan like she was seeing him for the first time all over again.
I'll be honest. It's moments like that which are hard to shoot without feeling them too. Two people who found each other as students, who built a life and a family together, finally making it official on the water, under that sky, to that song. It doesn't get more real than that.
Why This One Stays With Me
Every proposal is different, but the ones that hit hardest are the ones built on years, not just moments. Dylan and Astin didn't need grand gestures to make this meaningful as the years they'd already shared did that work. The boat, the sunset proposal, the song, and the secret were just the setting. The love was already there, long before I ever picked up my camera.
To Dylan and Astin: thank you for trusting me with this. For letting me disappear into the background of one of the biggest moments of your lives. I hope every time you look at these photos, you feel exactly what that deck felt like... the golden light, held breath, and a yes that had been years in the making.
